NYSC Relocation Documentation: Everything You Need to Know

Not every corps member ends up serving in the state they were originally posted. Some apply for redeployment at the orientation camp while others do so after leaving camp. Once the application is approved they are redeployed to a new state to continue their service year. I’m here to talk about the NYSC relocation documentation.

Getting your NYSC relocation approved is only one part of the journey. The next step is documenting in your new state of deployment.

For many relocated corps members, this is where the confusion starts. Questions like where to go, which documents to take, how to get a new PPA, and when the documentation will be completed are common because no one bothers to explain the process.

Luckily for you, I’ve done the legwork.

This guide walks you through the NYSC relocation documentation process in the new state. It explains each stage of the process and the documents you’ll need so you can complete your documentation with less stress and avoid mistakes.

Where to Go for NYSC Relocation Documentation

Once your NYSC relocation has been approved, your next step is to report at the NYSC Secretariat in your new state of deployment for documentation.

The NYSC State Secretariat is usually located in the capital of the state. If you are not sure where to find yours, don’t worry. I have included the addresses of all the 37 NYSC Secretariats at the end of this article so you can easily locate the one in your new state.

Before leaving for the Secretariat, make sure you are dressed in your complete NYSC uniform. This is important because corps members who are not properly dressed will not be granted access into the premises, which means you could end up making another trip.

One thing to keep in mind is that the documentation process explained below is not exactly the same in every state. Some states may have a slightly different order of processing or ask you to move between different offices. However, the documents required are generally the same across the country, and that is what we’ll look at next.

Requirements for NYSC Relocation Documentation

Before heading to the NYSC Secretariat, make sure you have all the required documents with you. Although a few states may ask for additional items, the following are the standard requirements you should expect.

  • Two passport photographs
  • NYSC Green Card
  • NYSC Relocation Letter
  • Certificate or Statement of Result
  • NYSC Identity Card
  • Request Letter (Optional)
  • International Passport data page (foreign graduates)
  • Practising licence (medical graduates)
  • Bank account details

In most states, the documentation itself can be completed the same day, provided you have all the required documents. However, if any document is missing or there are many corps members waiting to be attended to, you may have to return another day.

Below is a brief explanation of each requirement and why you may need them during the NYSC relocation documentation process.

Passport Photographs

You will be required to submit two passport photographs during your NYSC relocation documentation. You can use the same passport photographs you used during orientation camp or take a new one if you prefer. There is no fixed background colour for the photograph, so whether it has a white or red background is not an issue as long as your face is clear and easily identifiable.

Green Card

The NYSC Green Card is one of the most important documents you will submit during your documentation. It contains your biodata information which the officials need to verify your details and process your records in your new state of deployment. You only need to print it in black and white. There is no need for a coloured copy.

NYSC Relocation Letter

The relocation approval letter is the official document that confirms your relocation from your original state of deployment to a new one. This is one of the key documents required for your documentation because it serves as proof that you have been officially posted to the new state. Without it, the officials will not attend to you.

When going for NYSC relocation documentation, take the original coloured printout of the relocation letter along with a photocopy, as both may be requested during the process.

Certificate or Statement of Result

Your academic certificate or statement of result helps confirm that you’re a qualified graduate and also shows your course of study. This information may be considered when assigning you to a Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).

If you graduated from a university, you will present your bachelor’s degree certificate or statement of result. Polytechnic graduates should go with both their OND and HND certificates or statements of result, as both are commonly requested.

NYSC Identity Card

This is the ID card that was issued to you in your previous state of deployment. For the documentation process, you will typically be required to submit a photocopy of the ID card, although it is advisable to go with the original as well for identification if needed.

Request Letter

The request letter is only for corps members who already have a preferred Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) in their new state of deployment. For example, if you have attended an interview with an organization and they are willing to accept you for service, the organization may issue you a request letter asking NYSC to post you to them.

This document is optional and not every corps member will have one. However, if you have been given a request letter, it is advisable to submit it during the NYSC relocation documentation. While it does not guarantee that you will be posted to that organization, NYSC may consider the request when assigning you to a PPA.

PS: Some states don’t honour request letters. Ogun and Oyo are good examples.

Passport Data Page

This requirement only applies to foreign trained graduates. If you studied outside Nigeria, you should take along a photocopy of the data page of your international passport during documentation. Graduates of Nigerian institutions do not need to provide this document.

Practising Licence (For Medical Graduates)

This requirement applies to corps members in medical and other health related professions such as doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, and similar fields.

NYSC will request a current practising licence to confirm that you are properly registered and authorised to practise in your profession. This is especially important because many health related corps members are posted to hospitals, clinics, and other sensitive healthcare institutions during their service year.

Bank Account Details

You will need to go with the bank account details that was opened for you in your previous state of deployment. NYSC requires these details so your monthly allowances can continue to be paid without unnecessary delays after your relocation.

Depending on the state, you may also be asked to provide other banking information linked to the account, such as your BVN. It is advisable to have these details readily available when going for the documentation.

After Your NYSC Relocation Documentation

Once your documents have been verified, a file will be opened in your name. This file will contain all the documents you submitted during the documentation process. You do not need to worry about the order of arrangement because the officials will guide you on how the documents should be arranged before they are filed.

Depending on the state, you may also be asked to fill the Book of Life during documentation. If this is not done on the same day, you will be informed when to return and complete it.

After completing the required formalities, you can go back home and begin checking your NYSC dashboard regularly. The first thing to look out for is a change of your state code from your previous state of deployment to your new state. This usually reflects within a few days after successful documentation.

Once your state code has changed, continue checking your dashboard for your PPA letter. This is the letter that tells you where you have been posted to serve in your new state.

The PPA letter does not always appear immediately after the state code changes. For some corps members, it reflects within a few days, while others may have to wait a week or even longer. Keep checking your dashboard regularly until it becomes available.

Reporting to Your Place of Primary Assignment

Once your PPA letter appears on your dashboard, print it out and report to the organization where you have been posted. The organization will either accept or reject your posting.

Whichever the outcome, you should proceed to the Local Government Inspector’s (LGI) office in the local government where your PPA is located to complete the remaining documentation and other required NYSC formalities. At this stage, you will no longer be reporting to the NYSC State Secretariat.
