By now, you already know that some graduates don’t go for NYSC service. What you might not know is the exact document NYSC issues to recognize their status, especially since you’ve heard about the NYSC exclusion letter and the exemption certificate.
In this article, you will learn what the exclusion letter is and who is eligible for it. You’ll also understand the differences between the exclusion letter and the NYSC exemption certificate. By the end of this guide, you will know exactly where you fit and whether any graduate can simply decide to get the NYSC exclusion letter.

Meaning of NYSC Exclusion
Some graduates don’t go for NYSC service because of certain conditions set by the scheme. They are excluded from the one-year service, but being excluded does not mean NYSC does not recognize them. On the contrary, the scheme acknowledges that they are graduates, even though they did not go through the service like most graduates.
To confirm this recognition, the scheme issues them what is known as the NYSC exclusion letter. This letter serves as official proof that the graduate is recognized by NYSC, even though they did not attend orientation camp or go through the one-year service.
The NYSC exclusion letter carries the same weight for employment, political eligibility, or official verification in Nigeria. It simply indicates that the person was excluded from service under the specific conditions defined by NYSC.

Who Is Eligible for NYSC Exclusion?
Graduates who did part-time programs are automatically issued the NYSC exclusion letter. Part-time programs include distance learning, evening programs, or any other study arrangement that is not full-time.
The most common example are graduates of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). After completing online registration, these graduates are automatically excluded from the one-year service, but they receive the exclusion letter.
Graduates who completed full-time HND programs but did their OND on a part-time basis are also given the NYSC exclusion letter. Although there have been discussions about allowing such graduates to participate in the NYSC program, it remains to be seen when this will be implemented.
NYSC Exclusion Letter vs Exemption Certificate
Both concepts are often confused with each other. The NYSC exclusion letter applies to graduates who did part-time programs, while the NYSC exemption letter applies to graduates who did full-time programs but are excused from service due to age, serving in the armed forces, or other approved circumstances.
Here are the key differences:
| Exclusion Letter | Exemption Certificate |
|---|---|
| Exclusion letter applies specifically to graduates who completed part-time programs. | An exemption letter is for a graduate who did full-time programs but can’t serve due to age, serving in the armed forces, or other approved conditions. |
| The letter of exclusion is printed on the NYSC dashboard after online registration. | The exclusion letter applies specifically to graduates who completed part-time programs. |
| It can be reprinted on the dashboard anytime. | Returned to NYSC headquarters after six months if not collected by the graduate. |
| Most of these graduates don’t need the JAMB registration number during registration. | The JAMB registration number is required during online registration. |
How to Apply for NYSC Exclusion
Applying for the NYSC exclusion letter follows the same process as every other prospective corps member. The only difference is that your NYSC journey ends after the online registration stage.
This means you will go through the same mobilization process as other PCMs. I wrote a detailed guide on the NYSC online registration process. Ensure to read it so you can understand what to do once the registration portal opens.

How to Print The NYSC Exclusion Letter
After completing the online registration, your NYSC dashboard will display your details and passport photograph. At the top of the page, you will see a notice that your exclusion letter is being processed. At this stage, there is nothing else to do but wait for it to be released.
The NYSC exclusion letter is usually released around the same time as call-up letters. Sometimes it is available before them and sometimes a few days after. There is no fixed date so keep checking your dashboard regularly. NYSC will not send an email when it is ready. Your dashboard is where every update will appear.
The Remita payment is compulsory if you want to print the exclusion letter. Without this payment, you will not be able to access the print option even after the letter is available on your dashboard. So while waiting, make sure you complete the payment.
If you don’t know how to make the payment or confirm that it was successful, refer to the guide on NYSC call-up letter where I explained everything in detail.
