Everything You Need to Know about NYSC Exclusion Letter

By now, you already know that some graduates don’t go for NYSC service. What you might not know is the exact document NYSC issues to recognize their status, especially since you’ve heard about the NYSC exclusion letter and the exemption certificate.

In this article, you will learn what the exclusion letter is and who is eligible for it. You’ll also understand the differences between the exclusion letter and the NYSC exemption certificate. By the end of this guide, you will know exactly where you fit and whether any graduate can simply decide to get the NYSC exclusion letter.

NYSC Exclusion Letter

Meaning of NYSC Exclusion

Some graduates don’t go for NYSC service because of certain conditions set by the scheme. They are excluded from the one-year service, but being excluded does not mean NYSC does not recognize them. On the contrary, the scheme acknowledges that they are graduates, even though they did not go through the service like most graduates.

To confirm this recognition, the scheme issues them what is known as the NYSC exclusion letter. This letter serves as official proof that the graduate is recognized by NYSC, even though they did not attend orientation camp or go through the one-year service.

The NYSC exclusion letter carries the same weight for employment, political eligibility, or official verification in Nigeria. It simply indicates that the person was excluded from service under the specific conditions defined by NYSC.

Who Is Eligible for NYSC Exclusion?

Graduates who did part-time programs are automatically issued the NYSC exclusion letter. Part-time programs include distance learning, evening programs, or any other study arrangement that is not full-time.

The most common example are graduates of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). After completing online registration, these graduates are automatically excluded from the one-year service, but they receive the exclusion letter.

Graduates who completed full-time HND programs but did their OND on a part-time basis are also given the NYSC exclusion letter. Although there have been discussions about allowing such graduates to participate in the NYSC program, it remains to be seen when this will be implemented.

NYSC Exclusion Letter vs Exemption Certificate

Both concepts are often confused with each other. The NYSC exclusion letter applies to graduates who did part-time programs, while the NYSC exemption letter applies to graduates who did full-time programs but are excused from service due to age, serving in the armed forces, or other approved circumstances.

Here are the key differences:

Exclusion LetterExemption Certificate
Exclusion letter applies specifically to graduates who completed part-time programs. An exemption letter is for a graduate who did full-time programs but can’t serve due to age, serving in the armed forces, or other approved conditions.
The letter of exclusion is printed on the NYSC dashboard after online registration.
The exclusion letter applies specifically to graduates who completed part-time programs.
It can be reprinted on the dashboard anytime.Returned to NYSC headquarters after six months if not collected by the graduate.
Most of these graduates don’t need the JAMB registration number during registration. The JAMB registration number is required during online registration.

How to Apply for NYSC Exclusion

Applying for the NYSC exclusion letter follows the same process as every other prospective corps member. The only difference is that your NYSC journey ends after the online registration stage.

How to Print The NYSC Exclusion Letter

After completing the online registration, your NYSC dashboard will display your details and passport photograph. At the top of the page, you will see a notice that your exclusion letter is being processed. At this stage, there is nothing else to do but wait for it to be released.

The NYSC exclusion letter is usually released around the same time as call-up letters. Sometimes it is available before them and sometimes a few days after. There is no fixed date so keep checking your dashboard regularly. NYSC will not send an email when it is ready. Your dashboard is where every update will appear.

The Remita payment is compulsory if you want to print the exclusion letter. Without this payment, you will not be able to access the print option even after the letter is available on your dashboard. So while waiting, make sure you complete the payment.

If you don’t know how to make the payment or confirm that it was successful, refer to the guide on NYSC call-up letter where I explained everything in detail.

    1. I would get my oxford brookes bsc in april, did the program via distance learning with ACCA, i just want to confirm that i don’t need to go to abuja as a foreign graduate right ?. I just need to register when the portal opens

    2. Good morning Local Man
I registered for the Exclusion letter last month and now it’s saying my “Exclusion letter has been processed” but nothing on my dashboard yet
Should i pay the 3k for printing before it shows?? Or it will have to show first before paying.
And how long does it take
      Thank you sir

    3. Good morning local man, how about those that finished studying a particular course in the university and they’ve served (NYSC) and they went back to study a fresh course from another university, will they be also given exclusion letter after graduation ?

This article is interesting and admire it, because it was educative, I learned a lot from it. It was really helpful.

    5. Please I registered for exclusion letter for this batch c and my dashboard is still showing in process and other PCM have been printing call up letter…please when should I be expecting.

      1. Please can one get exclusion letter because
He or she completed part-time programs during their OND, HND, or BSc studies.

I was told that the exemption certificate is issued to graduates who:
Are over 30 years old at the time of graduation.
        Served in the armed forces.
        Received a national honor.

    6. Good evening Local Man

I saw my name on the graduation list but one of my names was misspelt.

Also, they rearranged it from how it was in my other documents. What was supposed to come in as my last name, they used it as my saw name

    7. What about graduates of foreign distance learning programmes? I did Aptech and am currently doing my last year online at a UK school. Am I qualified for exclusion and how do I go about it?

      1. For Foreign-Trained Graduates, you will need to get an evaluation letter from the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja. Whether or not you’ll be excluded from service will be known after online registration.

        1. Sorry but just to clarify, I’m doing distance learning course with a UK university but I’m not in the UK. Won’t this class me under part-time and make me get exclusion letter?

Or is it that when foreign graduates are registering there’s no part time/distance learning option on the portal? I know with local graduates they can select part time when registering to avoid any complications

          1. Sandwich and distant learning programs are categorized as part time under NYSC. So yes, you’ll be excluded from service even though you’ll still need to follow the same procedure like every other foreign graduate.

            1. One more thing Sir, since I didn’t travel I don’t have the travel documents for foreign graduates. I only have international passport and travel documents to another country, but not my country of study.

What will I do because according to your other article for foreign graduates I’ll need residency permit and entry/exit visa for the country of study?

              Thank you very much

Good Morning Local Man. I did OND part time and HND full time( did my jamb regularization).
My name came out on the Senate list. Will I be able to serve as other Corp members or I will be issue Exclusion letter.

      1. What the senate list does is make you eligible for online registration.
Since you didn’t a part time program during your OND, you’ll be excluded from service after online registration. That is the policy as at the time of this response.

    9. Completed my Part time BSc in 2003 and applied for exclusion in 2013 which was granted. However i just realises that an error occurred in the year of graduation on thw certificate instead if 2003, it had 2002. Also my school name has changed afterwards but then my cerrificate is on the old name while the exclusion is on the new name. I have visited the NYSC HQ Abuja and was told my school has to notify tgem officially. How long can it take to get a renewal of the certificate and will it still be through the new process?

      1. While I can’t say if it’s easy to get this correction done, any mistake that needs to be corrected must be sent through the NYSC senate list. This doesn’t happen fast but the first place to begin is to talk to your school about it.

    10. My exclussion letter had been processed 3month but I can not get, I have tried all the means but no avail , I need assistance

    11. Studied in the UK and graduated in 2018. Started my PhD in the UK in October 2018 and recently finished in July, 2025. Am I eligible for a exemption. I am 31 years old finished my first degree at 25.

      1. No Bassey, you’re not eligible for exemption because NYSC exemption is only granted if you were above 30 years old at the time you earned your first degree.

Since you finished your undergraduate degree in 2018 at age 25, you fall within the service age bracket. Your later PhD completion and current age doesn’t change that.

    12. Thanks local man for your availability. Pls i registered for exclusion Batch B 2025 earlier September 2025 but Pcm are printing call up but we have not been able to print exclusion. Pls what could be the cause of the delay?

      1. The exclusion letter is usually made available before or when NYSC call-up letters are released. However, things look to be different this time around because no one has gotten the Exclusion Letter. There’s nothing to worry about though. It will definitely be made available for printing. Just keep checking your dashboard everyday.

    13. My school send Senate list without Jamb regularization, and they approved and I applied but error occurred on my date of birth.
I went NYSC headquarter and made a complain and they send me to Jamb office and Jamb said I don’t have Jamb Number so is not from them.
Please how can I correct and which office will I go ?

    14. abdabdulrahman030@gmail.com

Is my state of origin I want to change in the jamb and they said no network for now so am asking if I proceed with the online register now and then before they start releasing call up number i was able to change the state successfully will the change of state show on the nysc portal?

so that I can apply for relocation or direct posting to the state I want?

    15. Omachi Solomon OKOLO

I am Omachi Solomon Okolo, I graduated from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, department of library and information science, 2017.
The exclusion letter they sent to me wasn’t correct, my sex was changed to female instead of male, please can you correct it for me and resend it to me,

    16. I registered for exclusion for NYSC for batch a 2025 and its not come out since I want to know the problem

    17. Hello, local man.

Please I want to get some clarification, I did a regular degree part time CES PROGRAM in UNICAL. But I did jamb regularization in my year 3 and in my final year I submitted my regularization form to the school admission office, after few weeks, they said I should go jamb office and do Undisclosed approved admission, which I did and the jamb office gave me an indemnity form, which I submitted to my school and after few weeks, it was approved, I got a retroactive admission letter and a new jamb registration number without P at the end of the from jamb .

Please I want to know if after NYSC registration if I will get call up letter or exclusion letter.

      1. I can’t answer your question. As far as I know, part-time graduates are excluded from service. You’ll find out what applies to your situation after online registration.

    18. Ojo Olusola Victor

      Good morning Local Man,

Please, I read your article on “Exclusion letter”. I have a friend who attended OND and later got direct entry to the University (AAUA) as a part time, she optioned for the part time so as to work and finance her study. She has graduated now and she has been mobilized on NYSC Portal. Note that she’s not up to 30 years of age.
      Please my questions are:

      1. Which one will she go for in either Exclusion or Exemption?

      2. When is the next registration this 2025 for PCM so that she can register on time and have her letter in handy soon.

      3. Are there any cost to be paid for in either of the letter that she will go for., If yes, please state range.

      4. When the letter is out will it be printed on NYSC Portal or to be collected in her school?

      Thanks so much.

      1. 1. It’s not in her choice to make. NYSC decides. But going by your story, she is due for exclusion.

        2. There’s no registration date yet.

        3. There’s a cost of around 3,000 naira for the printing of exclusion certificate. The cyber cafe operators will include the charge for their services as well.

        4. The exclusion letter will be available for printing directly from the PCM’s dashboard.

    19. Iorbee Solomon Aondoungwa

I need my NYSC Exclusion letter, I graduated from Nasarawa State University keffi February 2024.

    20. Grace Samuel Job

I graduated from the university of Calabar Calabar since the year 2010. I apply for job and I need the exemption certificate urgently. Please how can I go about it.

      1. Things don’t work that way. Make enquiries from your school to be sure your details are mobilized on the see senate list. This will ensure your eligibility for registration once NYSC portal opens.

    21. Please I completed Higher Diploma March 23 2004, at FUTO on part-time program.
Please I need an Exclusive Letter of NYSC. Please advice me on procedure.
      Thank you
      Bassey Akpan

      1. David Elizabeth oluwatoyin

I have been typing to login on the portal but not going through telling me my mind does not exist please is there anything I can do about that? Because I have went to Nini office and they told me my nin is correct

    22. can my exclusion letter process stopped and wait till the implementation of ond part time and hnd full time are eligible to serve

    23. Ayanwale Aminat Ajoke

i was saw your exclusion letter is been processed which we had that ond part time who converted to hnd part time have access to serve
is there any solution to this

    24. Blessing Oyinkansola

I mistakely click on part-time when registering yesterday and I was giving exclusion letter, pls is there a way I can change it since I haven’t paid to the portal yet. Or no luck at all🥺

      1. I finished from University of ilorin in 2016. I have been into businesses so I didn’t bother to get my exclusion letter. Now I am trying to get it but it’s telling me on the portal that ‘Details aren’t found and I should confirm that my details are correct and my school provided correct details’. How do I go about this

    25. Jaiyesimi Olusegun

I prefer the exclusion letter since it is recognized and has no disadvantages. I have been working since my OND days, supporting myself. Leaving my current job for NYSC might make it hard to get another, considering Nigeria’s job situation.

I believe NYSC should consider granting exclusion to those with work experience, just like part-time students who balance work and study. During registration, PCMs should indicate if they are employed-those unemployed can serve, while those with stable jobs should get an exclusion or exemption.

            1. Adejumobi Susan Mayomide

“I attempted to log in to the portal to make a payment for the exclusion letter, but the option is not appearing

    26. Dike Okechukwu Christopher

Thank so much for this enlightenment it has helped clarify most doubt about Exemption and Exclusion
