Everything You Need to Know about NYSC Exclusion Letter

Many prospective corps members (PCMs) often struggle to understand the NYSC exclusion letter, exemption certificate, and the qualifications required for each.

NYSC Exclusion Letter

While I’ve already written about the NYSC exemption certificate, this article focuses on the exclusion letter, what it is, who qualifies for it, and how to get it. By the end of this guide, you should be able to tell the difference between the two.

Let’s get right into it!

What is NYSC Exclusion Letter?

NYSC Letter of Exclusion is a document that formally excludes a graduate from participating in the NYSC program. In Nigeria or abroad, institutions issue it to graduates who completed their tertiary education through part-time or distance learning programs.

The most common recipients of the exclusion letter include students of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and polytechnic graduates who attended part-time programs for their OND (Ordinary National Diploma).

During the 2024 Batch ‘C’ pre-mobilization workshop, NYSC informed stakeholders that they are working with other relevant government agencies to allow part-time polytechnic OND graduates qualify for service instead of exclusion. We hope they enforce this change soon.

How to Apply for the NYSC Exclusion Letter

The process for getting an NYSC exclusion letter follows the same mobilization procedure as other prospective corps members.

First, your school must mobilize you. Once you’ve been mobilized, you can then proceed to register online for NYSC when the portal is opened.

How Long Does It Take to Get the Exclusion Letter?

Unlike the processing time for the exemption certificate, which takes longer, NYSC issues the exclusion letter shortly after online registration. It becomes available at the same time as other prospective corps members are printing their call-up letters.

Difference Between Exclusion Letter and Exemption Certificate

The exclusion letter is for graduates who completed part-time programs during their OND, HND, or BSc studies. On the other hand, the exemption certificate is issued to graduates who:

  • Are over 30 years old at the time of graduation.
  • Served in the armed forces.
  • Received a national honor.

Can I Get a Job With NYSC Exclusion Letter?

There is absolutely no disadvantage with the NYSC Exclusion Letter as it relates to employability in Nigeria. The document is legally acceptable in place of the NYSC Discharge Certificate, both in public and private establishments across the country.

  1. Hello, local man.

Please I want to get some clarification, I did a regular degree part time CES PROGRAM in UNICAL. But I did jamb regularization in my year 3 and in my final year I submitted my regularization form to the school admission office, after few weeks, they said I should go jamb office and do Undisclosed approved admission, which I did and the jamb office gave me an indemnity form, which I submitted to my school and after few weeks, it was approved, I got a retroactive admission letter and a new jamb registration number without P at the end of the from jamb .

Please I want to know if after NYSC registration if I will get call up letter or exclusion letter.

    1. I can’t answer your question. As far as I know, part-time graduates are excluded from service. You’ll find out what applies to your situation after online registration.

    Good morning Local Man,

Please, I read your article on “Exclusion letter”. I have a friend who attended OND and later got direct entry to the University (AAUA) as a part time, she optioned for the part time so as to work and finance her study. She has graduated now and she has been mobilized on NYSC Portal. Note that she’s not up to 30 years of age.
    Please my questions are:

    1. Which one will she go for in either Exclusion or Exemption?

    2. When is the next registration this 2025 for PCM so that she can register on time and have her letter in handy soon.

    3. Are there any cost to be paid for in either of the letter that she will go for., If yes, please state range.

    4. When the letter is out will it be printed on NYSC Portal or to be collected in her school?

    Thanks so much.

    1. 1. It’s not in her choice to make. NYSC decides. But going by your story, she is due for exclusion.

      2. There’s no registration date yet.

      3. There’s a cost of around 3,000 naira for the printing of exclusion certificate. The cyber cafe operators will include the charge for their services as well.

      4. The exclusion letter will be available for printing directly from the PCM’s dashboard.

    1. Things don’t work that way. Make enquiries from your school to be sure your details are mobilized on the see senate list. This will ensure your eligibility for registration once NYSC portal opens.

  5. Please I completed Higher Diploma March 23 2004, at FUTO on part-time program.

    1. I finished from University of ilorin in 2016. I have been into businesses so I didn’t bother to get my exclusion letter. Now I am trying to get it but it’s telling me on the portal that ‘Details aren’t found and I should confirm that my details are correct and my school provided correct details’. How do I go about this

  9. Jaiyesimi Olusegun

I prefer the exclusion letter since it is recognized and has no disadvantages. I have been working since my OND days, supporting myself. Leaving my current job for NYSC might make it hard to get another, considering Nigeria’s job situation.

I believe NYSC should consider granting exclusion to those with work experience, just like part-time students who balance work and study. During registration, PCMs should indicate if they are employed-those unemployed can serve, while those with stable jobs should get an exclusion or exemption.
