Understanding the NYSC Exemption Certificate and How to Get It

You’ve probably heard about the NYSC exemption certificate (sometimes called exemption letter), and you’ve also heard about the exclusion letter and wondered which one actually applies to you. It can get confusing because the terms are often used interchangeably, but they don’t mean the same thing.

This article will help you understand what the NYSC exemption certificate is and who it applies to. It will also explain how it differs from the NYSC exclusion letter. By the end, you’ll have a clear sense of where you stand and whether the exemption certificate is something any graduate can just request.

NYSC Exemption Certificate

What Is the NYSC Exemption Certificate?

The NYSC exemption certificate is given to graduates who, based on certain criteria, are not allowed to participate in the one‑year program. This is not a matter of choice because when these criteria are met, exemption is automatic.

Those exempted from service completed full-time studies just like other graduates, but factors like age, enrollment in the armed forces, or being a recipient of national honours make exemption compulsory.

Being exempted in this way does not make a graduate any less qualified. It is simply how NYSC structures the program. The exemption certificate serves as proof of this status and is fully recognized for employment, further studies, and other official purposes across Nigeria, just like the NYSC discharge certificate.

Who Is Eligible for NYSC Exemption?

According to Section 2, Subsection (2) of the NYSC Act Cap N84 LFN 2004, a graduate is exempted from service if they meet at least one of the following conditions as at the date of graduation:

  1. Over the age of thirty (30) at graduation.
  2. Has served in the Armed Forces of the Federation or the Nigeria Police Force for a period of more than nine months.
  3. Member of staff of any of the following:
    – The Nigerian Security Organization.
    – The State Security Service
    – The National Intelligence Agency
    – The Defence Intelligence Service
  4. Has received any National Honour.

Meeting any of these conditions automatically qualifies a graduate for the NYSC exemption certificate.

How NYSC Uses Age to Decide Exemption

As noted in the eligibility criteria above, a graduate can only qualify for exemption based on age. NYSC compares the birth date on the student’s JAMB record with the date of graduation provided by the school. For foreign graduates who did not write JAMB, the date of birth on their international passport is used instead. Anyone over 30 years old at the time of graduation is automatically exempted from participating in the program.

This process is entirely automatic and not a matter of choice. Graduates who fall into this age category are exempted, whether they like it or not. Those who are exactly 30 years old or younger at graduation are not eligible for exemption under this arrangement.

Affected PCMs will only receive the notification of exemption on their dashboard after completing NYSC registration.

Differences Between NYSC Exemption and Exclusion Letter

The exemption certificate and the NYSC exclusion letter are often confused but they apply to different groups of graduates. Exemption certificates are for full-time graduates excused from service due to age or other approved conditions, while exclusion letters are for graduates who part-time programs.

Here are the key differences:

NYSC Exemption CertificateNYSC Exclusion Letter
The exemption certificate is for full-time graduates who clocked 30 years before graduation. The exclusion letter is for part-time graduates only.
Exemption certificates are sent to the graduating institutions, usually two months after registration. The exclusion letter is available on the NYSC dashboard after online registration.
They are returned to NYSC headquarters if not collected by the graduate within six months.Exclusion letters can be reprinted from the NYSC dashboard at a later time.
The JAMB registration number is required for full-time graduates during online registration. Most part-time graduates do not need JAMB number during registration.

Online Registration Guide for NYSC Exemption

Meeting the criteria for NYSC exemption does not remove the need to satisfy all other registration requirements. Just like graduates who are eligible for service, exempted graduates must also complete the standard steps during online registration.

Refer to this guide, where I explained the full list of requirements for NYSC online registration and the step-by-step process.

How to Collect Your NYSC Exemption Certificate

After completing online registration, the NYSC exemption certificate is processed by NYSC. This usually takes two to three months before the certificates are dispatched to the respective schools of the graduates. NYSC often announces the dispatch on its social media pages whenever this is done. I also provide updates on my NYSC WhatsApp Channel whenever the certificates are available.

Graduates can then go to their school to pick up the exemption certificate. For foreign graduates, collection must be done at the NYSC headquarters in Abuja. If a graduate does not collect the certificate within six months, it is returned to the headquarters, and they must go there to retrieve it.

What to Do When Wrongfully Exempted from Service

Some graduates may appear as exempted because of a wrong date of birth on their JAMB record. Since NYSC determines exemption automatically using the date of birth and the graduation date, an incorrect birth date can wrongly trigger exemption or disqualify a graduate.

If your date of birth on JAMB is incorrect but correct on your WAEC certificate, you can still become eligible for NYSC. You will need to apply for a date of birth correction on the NYSC dashboard using WAEC verification pin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a medical condition qualify a graduate for NYSC exemption?

NYSC does not provide exemptions solely based on medical conditions. During registration, medical issues are considered only for health or concessional posting, such as being posted closer to home. If a graduate believes there may be a valid exemption consideration, they can approach NYSC directly for guidance.

How long does it take to receive the NYSC exemption certificate after registration?

It usually takes two to three months after completing online registration for NYSC to process the exemption certificate and dispatch it to the respective schools.

Will I be required to attend NYSC camp if I am exempted?

No. Graduates who are exempt from service do not go to camp. Their NYSC journey ends after completing online registration.

Can I choose to serve if I am already exempted?

No. Exemption is automatic when the eligibility criteria are met. Graduates who are exempted cannot opt to serve, as the process is determined by NYSC.

Are NYSC exemption certificates accepted by employers?

Yes. Employers and institutions across Nigeria treat the NYSC exemption certificate the same way as the NYSC discharge certificate for work, further studies, and official matters.

By now, you should have a clear understanding of what the NYSC exemption is all about and whether you fall into this category. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the requirements for online registration so you don’t encounter avoidable difficulties when the time comes.

  2. Angela Aloysius Zebedee

Good afternoon Sir/Ma, can I get exemption letter without jamb Regularization? I work with Security Agency, am 44 now, I obtained my ND 2005 without jamb and did HND part-time. I need NYSC exemption letter, how do I go about it.

    1. NYSC doesn’t require JAMB regularization from anyone. All they need is that your school mobilizes your details on the senate list before you can register for NYSC.

Your school however may have conditions you must meet before your details can be mobilized on the senate list, so you must fulfill that first, whatever it is.

  3. Local man, please, I want clarity on this question. Do I have to mobilze first for NYSC, that’s when I am above 30yrs before, I can apply for Exemption Letter? Or, I would just apply directly for Exemption Letter whenever NYSC has open its portal for registration?

  4. When you mean graduation do you mean sign out I sign out 2020 but the whole graduation is still delayed by the system next year January 30 I’ll be 30 year’s can I still go any hope

    1. There’s no application for exemption. Everyone whose name is on the senate list can register for NYSC whenever the registration portal is opened. The system automatically places registered graduates into the category they belong, whether serving, exemption, or exclusion.

  5. I am studied BNSc Nursing at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Distance Learning Centre and I want to go for NYSC, or will I receive an exemption letter or an exclusion letter?

  6. emmanuelosinachi2025@outlook.com

My nysc dash board reads: you are exempted from service. Can I change my DOB at jamb office and still go ahead and serve?

  7. My question is that, for exemption graduate online registration process, after providing thumbprint, capture all his Biodata, did he going to proceed to payment and wait for Call-up Number?

  8. Good evening, Local man. I have served during my HND days. I now want to register for exclusion letter for the BSc that I got from NOUN this year. Will I be able to register or I still need to be making use of the NYSC certificate that I got in 2017.I look forward to your feedback.

    1. I have two questions.
Firstly for someone who graduated after 30yrs and still want to serve by doing age adjustments, can changing only the NIN age work or the age in order certificate still need to be adjusted.
Secondly, what if u have registered and u ve seen the message that ur exemption later will be sent to ur institution is there anything u can still do to reverse the tide and still go for service?

      1. Changing your age in NIN doesn’t impact anything. NYSC uses the date of birth on JAMB.
Accept your fate and move on, there’s nothing you can do about the exemption.

  9. Good afternoon local man!
Please I had been exempted from the Nysc and directed to collect Nysc exemption certificate whenever it’s ready at my institution… But what about the payment for Nysc in my dashboard!
Should i have to pay or not?
    Faithfully yours

  14. Onyinyechi Praise Ekwuru

    Please Local man
If we can do some registration before going to an accredited cyber cafe, what website are we to go to

For instance to get the email confirmation

  15. Thanks sir, please am working with defence industry corperation of Nigeria (DICON), and am above thirty now, but my year of graduation on my statement of result shows that am bellow 30, and I want to apply for exemption please will it be possible?

    1. I don’t know if your organization counts as part of those that qualifies service exclusion. You can try that during NYSC registration and see what becomes of it.

    1. Pregnant women are not allowed to stay throughout the NYSC orientation camp. NYSC policy permits you to report for documentation and medical verification, but you’ll be released shortly after for your safety and that of your baby.

So yes, you can enter camp, but once verified, you’ll be allowed to exit immediately. ,

  16. Pls I want to ask if my exception letter is approve and it’s available to print on dashboard can I print it out for use or I have to wait until it is sent to school

  17. Thank you Local man,
Though my question isn’t just directly related, but I would like to ask, how long does it take to get an exclusion certificate after registering?
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Lanre, once you complete your registration and it’s confirmed that you’re qualified for exclusion, your exclusion certificate is usually ready for download within a few days after registration closes for that batch. Sometimes, it might take weeks. You’ll be able to print it directly from your NYSC dashboard once it’s ready.

  18. If the candidate clocked 30 after graduation and at the time of their registration for NYSC are that age, will they still be exempted?

    1. Even though your question is not clear, what NYSC checks is the age you were as at the date of graduation, not your age when you’re registering. If you graduated before clocking 30, you’re eligible for service even if you later cross 30 before registering. If you graduated after 30, you’ll be exempted.

  19. I did part time as HND ,my name appear on senate list, what kind of certificate I will be given for NYSC after registration,,is it exemption or exclusion

  20. The other name on the Senate list is Chidozie and the one on my NIN is Chiedozie. Please, I hope it won’t affect me getting exemption letter?

  21. James Anthony James

My name is on graduation list, and matriculation list but it’s not on Senate list and i graduated before age 30 what could be the problem for my name not to be on Senate list. I need clarification sir.

    1. It might be that your school hasn’t uploaded the senate list on NYSC portal yet. Being 30 or above doesn’t mean your name won’t be included on the senate list. As a matter of fact, it’s a compulsory requirement for mobilization.

  22. What is the exact year for you to get exempted or go to service, from my year of graduation and date of birth, I am 30 years old, can I be able to go to service or I will be exempted, after registration, please I want to know.

  23. Babalola Esther Akaette

please, I want to ask, the name on my nin has been changed to my hubby’s name and I want to get the exemption letter. Is this something to worry about?

  24. Awodumila ojo oluwatosin

I have 1994 on my jamb ,and 994 on my nin, but I have pass d age of 30 before senate approved d result,I was told to reduce my age on nin which I did,but I’m unable to reduce d one on nin ,now I decided to go for exemption letter now but d age is different and I can’t change my nin again because it can only be change once. Pls what can I do

  25. Please I have a question.
My date of birth is 22nd January, while during my JAMB application the application officer mistakenly chooses March instead of January.
Will this cause an issue during registration? But on my NIN the DOB remains 22nd January not March

    1. Good day local man! Pls how could someone be conversant or aware that he/she was exempted?, was it immediately after successfully completing the Nysc online registration or the notification comes a while after the registration?

  26. I have been following your post on how to obtain Nysc cert. I believe my case is unique. I got admission to an ND full time program is 2014, and didn’t enroll for Hnd untill 2021 which I now graduated last year, and it was completed through a weekend program. I recently found out that I am not on the admission list on the verify portal of jamb, so I went to a cbt centre to reprint the admission letter but they couldnt. Then I went to the jamb office to reprint my admission letter and they said the service is not available. I want to know if I can still register for nysc with my 2014 jamb reg number and what type of cert will be issued to me. Note: I am still below 30 years.

    1. ND holders don’t serve. What qualifies you for NYSC is the HND certificate. Unfortunately, in this, you will be given exclusion letter you didn’t do a full time program during your HND. Contact your school to know the update on your mobilization.

  27. Please sir I would like to clarify if NIN is mandatory To register for exemption letter?
I have 2 names on NIN and 3 on my result

    1. Yes, NIN is a compulsory requirement for NYSC registration. While I can’t 100% say it will be a problem or not, you should consider adding the missing name on your NIN profile for the sake of uniformity across your documents.

  28. Please can part time student get exemption letter…please or is there any other letter that will be given to PT Student

  29. Otoyo Peter antai

I did online registration last year but I missed the camp. Now am above 30 and I don’t want to serve, I need exemption, how will I go about it. Thanks

      1. Pls, I want clarification about this for a friend concerning NYSC.

She applied for correction of date of birth, she got the form at the JAMB office, Minna, it was approved here then sent to Abuja for further approval.

She has not gotten any information about it from Abuja.

When the portal was opened for NYSC registration, she registered.

Now she’s seeing the exemption notice.

Is there anything that can be done for her to still go for service sir?

        1. From experience, NYSC refers to the date of birth on JAMB as at the time the applicant enrolled for JAMB. I don’t know how they do that but corrections years later doesn’t reflect for NYSC registration.

That explains why your friend is exempted. She is above 30 years upon graduation, based on her date of birth on JAMB.

  30. I am above 30 years when I finished my HND part time in 2015. I can I get an exemption letter. Can I get an electronic version of the exemption too.

  31. I was receiving diff, information from diff angle about this
I Graduated before 30, and going to camp at 30.
Someone said 30 years old is not allowed in d camp
While another person said you can go at anytime once you graduate before 30years
Can someone put light on this?

  32. Felicia Joseph Gandur

I need mine and I don’t know how to go about it. I finished from Nasarawa state university (Nsuk) 2019 but I was able to collect my result in 2021, and now I need my exemption letter so how can I go about it please
