NYSC Exemption Certificate: All You Need to Know

I believe you must have heard about the NYSC exemption certificate and you wonder whether it applies to you or not.

This is even more confusing if you’re above 30 years.

The National Youth Service Corps promotes national unity and development by engaging Nigerian graduates under 30 years old in a one-year service to the nation. Participants who successfully complete the program receive NYSC Discharge Certificate which is an official proof service completion.

However, not all graduates are eligible to participate in the program. For the ineligible ones, NYSC either issue the Exemption Certificate or the Exclusion Letter, depending on the circumstance.

NYSC Exemption Certificate

In this guide, I’ll focus on the NYSC Exemption Certificate, its purpose, and how to obtain it. You can also read my article on the NYSC Exclusion Letter to better understand the differences.

Before I continue, it is important to understand that the three types of NYSC certificates (Discharge, Exemption, and Exclusion) serve the same purpose in Nigeria.

Employers and government agencies treat them equally, meaning they do not view exempted graduates as inferior to those who served.

Having said that, let’s dive right in!

What is NYSC Exemption Certificate?

The NYSC Exemption Certificate is issued to graduates who are not allowed to participate in the one-year NYSC scheme because of certain reasons. Employers and government agencies in Nigeria recognize this certificate as proof of exemption from the program.

The NYSC Exemption Letter, as it is sometimes called, is the arrangement of NYSC to ensure that even though some categories of graduates are exempted from service, they are not victimized as a result of that.

It is worth knowing that both local and foreign graduates can receive service exemptions if they meet the required conditions as explained below.

  2. Has served in the Armed Forces of the Federation or the Nigeria Police Force for a period of more than nine months.

4. Has received any National Honour.

For clarity, the age criteria above is verified by comparing the date of birth on JAMB against the date of graduation provided by corps producing institutions.

How to Apply for NYSC Exemption Certificate

The NYSC mobilization process allows you to obtain the Exemption Certificate. However, it is important to note that you don’t “apply” for NYSC Exemption. Eligible persons automatically receive exemption after NYSC online registration.

What this means is that you don’t get to choose whether or not you want to be exempted from service.

Immediately after completing online registration, the NYSC system automatically updates this based on the information provided on the senate list and what you supplied during online registration.

If you schooled in Nigeria, check out this guide to know the registration requirements. For those that school outside of the country, the foreign graduates registration requirements are for you.

In a nutshell, those exempted from service basically do the same activities as every other PCM. The only difference is that their NYSC journey ends after online registration.

I believe I have been able to educate you on what the NYSC Exemption is and what qualifies one for it. Here are some frequently asked questions that might be helpful for you.

What is the difference between NYSC Discharge and Exemption certificate?

Those who participate in the NYSC service for a period of 12 months receive the NYSC Discharge Certificate. On the other hand, graduates excused from service on certain grounds, as explained above, receive the exemption certificate.

How Long Does It Take to Get an Exemption Certificate?

The processing time for the NYSC Exemption Certificate depends on the NYSC schedule. Typically, you should receive it within 3 months after successfully registering online for NYSC. You’ll be notified when your certificate is ready for collection at the Students’ Affairs Unit of your School.

Can I get a job with a NYSC Exemption Letter?

Yes, you can! Employers of labor within the country are legally required to recognize and accept the NYSC exemption certificate, which serves the same purpose as the Discharge Certificate.

  1. Thank you Local man,
Though my question isn’t just directly related, but I would like to ask, how long does it take to get an exclusion certificate after registering?
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Lanre, once you complete your registration and it’s confirmed that you’re qualified for exclusion, your exclusion certificate is usually ready for download within a few days after registration closes for that batch. Sometimes, it might take weeks. You’ll be able to print it directly from your NYSC dashboard once it’s ready.

  2. If the candidate clocked 30 after graduation and at the time of their registration for NYSC are that age, will they still be exempted?

    1. Even though your question is not clear, what NYSC checks is the age you were as at the date of graduation, not your age when you’re registering. If you graduated before clocking 30, you’re eligible for service even if you later cross 30 before registering. If you graduated after 30, you’ll be exempted.

  3. I did part time as HND ,my name appear on senate list, what kind of certificate I will be given for NYSC after registration,,is it exemption or exclusion

  4. The other name on the Senate list is Chidozie and the one on my NIN is Chiedozie. Please, I hope it won’t affect me getting exemption letter?

  5. James Anthony James

My name is on graduation list, and matriculation list but it’s not on Senate list and i graduated before age 30 what could be the problem for my name not to be on Senate list. I need clarification sir.

    1. It might be that your school hasn’t uploaded the senate list on NYSC portal yet. Being 30 or above doesn’t mean your name won’t be included on the senate list. As a matter of fact, it’s a compulsory requirement for mobilization.

  6. What is the exact year for you to get exempted or go to service, from my year of graduation and date of birth, I am 30 years old, can I be able to go to service or I will be exempted, after registration, please I want to know.

  7. Babalola Esther Akaette

please, I want to ask, the name on my nin has been changed to my hubby’s name and I want to get the exemption letter. Is this something to worry about?

  8. Awodumila ojo oluwatosin

I have 1994 on my jamb ,and 994 on my nin, but I have pass d age of 30 before senate approved d result,I was told to reduce my age on nin which I did,but I’m unable to reduce d one on nin ,now I decided to go for exemption letter now but d age is different and I can’t change my nin again because it can only be change once. Pls what can I do

  9. Please I have a question.
My date of birth is 22nd January, while during my JAMB application the application officer mistakenly chooses March instead of January.
Will this cause an issue during registration? But on my NIN the DOB remains 22nd January not March

  10. I have been following your post on how to obtain Nysc cert. I believe my case is unique. I got admission to an ND full time program is 2014, and didn’t enroll for Hnd untill 2021 which I now graduated last year, and it was completed through a weekend program. I recently found out that I am not on the admission list on the verify portal of jamb, so I went to a cbt centre to reprint the admission letter but they couldnt. Then I went to the jamb office to reprint my admission letter and they said the service is not available. I want to know if I can still register for nysc with my 2014 jamb reg number and what type of cert will be issued to me. Note: I am still below 30 years.

    1. ND holders don’t serve. What qualifies you for NYSC is the HND certificate. Unfortunately, in this, you will be given exclusion letter you didn’t do a full time program during your HND. Contact your school to know the update on your mobilization.

  11. Please sir I would like to clarify if NIN is mandatory To register for exemption letter?
I have 2 names on NIN and 3 on my result

    1. Yes, NIN is a compulsory requirement for NYSC registration. While I can’t 100% say it will be a problem or not, you should consider adding the missing name on your NIN profile for the sake of uniformity across your documents.

  12. Please can part time student get exemption letter…please or is there any other letter that will be given to PT Student

  13. Otoyo Peter antai

I did online registration last year but I missed the camp. Now am above 30 and I don’t want to serve, I need exemption, how will I go about it. Thanks

      1. Pls, I want clarification about this for a friend concerning NYSC.

She applied for correction of date of birth, she got the form at the JAMB office, Minna, it was approved here then sent to Abuja for further approval.

She has not gotten any information about it from Abuja.

When the portal was opened for NYSC registration, she registered.

Now she’s seeing the exemption notice.

Is there anything that can be done for her to still go for service sir?

        1. From experience, NYSC refers to the date of birth on JAMB as at the time the applicant enrolled for JAMB. I don’t know how they do that but corrections years later doesn’t reflect for NYSC registration.

That explains why your friend is exempted. She is above 30 years upon graduation, based on her date of birth on JAMB.

  14. I am above 30 years when I finished my HND part time in 2015. I can I get an exemption letter. Can I get an electronic version of the exemption too.

  15. I was receiving diff, information from diff angle about this
I Graduated before 30, and going to camp at 30.
Someone said 30 years old is not allowed in d camp
While another person said you can go at anytime once you graduate before 30years
Can someone put light on this?
