Who Is Eligible for NYSC? A Guide on the Qualification Criteria

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is designed to harness the energy of graduates and promote national unity in Nigeria. It was established after the Nigerian Civil War to encourage cultural integration and bring young people from different regions together. Through NYSC eligibility, graduates get the chance to live and work in parts of the country different from where they grew up, helping them experience Nigeria’s diversity firsthand.

This NYSC eligibility guide is not just about who can go to camp. I will focus on those whom the program recognizes …basically, anyone who has business with NYSC at all. This includes graduates who will serve for 12 months, as well as those who will receive exemption certificates or exclusion letters.

Understanding these basic eligibility considerations is important because they form the program’s knowledge base. I will also point you in the right direction about articles you can read if you want to know more about specific categories, like who can actually go to camp.

NYSC eligibility criteria for Nigerian graduates, including recognition, service, exemption, and exclusion rules.

Eligibility Criteria for Participation in NYSC

The criteria for NYSC eligibility can be drawn from three main categories. These categories cover all graduates irrespective of their situation, whether they will go to camp, get an exemption, or be excluded.

The categories broadly focus on the person’s nationality, the type of education they have completed, and their age at the time of graduation.

Nationality and Citizenship

The first consideration for NYSC recognition is nationality. To be recognized by NYSC, a graduate must be a Nigerian citizen. This applies to everyone, whether they studied in Nigeria or abroad.

Part of meeting this criterion is having a valid National Identification Number (NIN). Without the NIN, NYSC will not recognize you, even if you have the right degree or meet other requirements. This applies to all graduates, including those who will attend camp as well as those who will receive an exemption or exclusion.

Educational Qualifications

The second consideration for NYSC recognition is the type of education a graduate has completed. To be recognized, a person must have completed a program at a tertiary institution, either in Nigeria or abroad.

For graduates from foreign institutions, NYSC recognizes programs that meet acceptable academic standards as determined by the Federal Ministry of Education.

Only graduates who did full-time programs are eligible to serve for the 12-month duration. Those who did part-time or distance learning programs will not serve. After registration, they are issued the NYSC exclusion letter.

As part of the educational requirements, those who will serve and go to camp are required to obtain the NERD clearance slip. Graduates who are excluded or exempted from service do not need this document.

The Age Limit for NYSC

The NYSC program is designed for youth. By definition, only graduates who are 30 years old or below at the date of graduation are considered within the youth category and eligible to serve for the 12-month duration.

Graduates who satisfy this age requirement and also completed a full-time program will go on to serve and attend camp. Those who completed a part-time program, even if under 30, will still be issued the NYSC exclusion letter, as mentioned earlier.

For graduates who exceed the 30-year age limit as at the date of graduation, they will not serve, even though they did a full-time program. Instead, they are issued the NYSC exemption certificate. The exemption is different from exclusion, and it recognizes that the graduate is formally part of the NYSC system, even though they will not participate in the 12-month service.

It is important to note that being above 30 does not mean a graduate cannot serve at all. What matters is their age at graduation. If they graduated while under 30, they remain eligible to serve whenever they are ready, even if they are 40 or older by the time they actually start the program.

Note: Graduates who are not yet 18 years old at the time of graduation are not eligible for NYSC.

Facts You Should Know About NYSC Eligibility

There are a few important facts about NYSC that many people find confusing, especially when trying to understand eligibility. Some of these facts relate to graduates who will go on to serve, while others apply to those who will be given exemption or exclusion letters.

National Service is Mandatory for Nigerian Graduates

NYSC is compulsory for every Nigerian graduate who has attended a tertiary institution. Once you earn a qualification from a recognized institution, you automatically have business with NYSC. That process may lead to service, exemption, or exclusion, but one way or another, NYSC must account for you. It is not optional.

For those who are eligible for service, the one-year participation is not negotiable. A graduate cannot decide to skip service and request an exemption instead. NYSC determines each person’s status based on its criteria, and that decision is final.

You Can Only Serve Once

NYSC recognition and service happen only once in a person’s lifetime. After a graduate has been mobilized and completed service, they cannot be called up again for another round of service, even if they later earn an additional qualification.

In the same way, once someone has been issued an exemption or exclusion letter, that status stands. NYSC does not process the same person twice under different categories.

Exemption Is Not Optional

Exemption is determined strictly by age at the time of graduation. Once a graduate falls into the exemption category under this rule, NYSC automatically assigns that status.

It is not a matter of choice. Someone who is exempted cannot later decide to serve, and someone who qualifies for service cannot choose to be exempted instead. NYSC fixes each person’s status according to its criteria, and that decision cannot be changed by preference.

The Exemption Certificate is Equivalent to the Discharge Certificate

The NYSC exemption certificate carries the same legal weight as the discharge certificate issued to those who completed the one-year service. Both documents show that the individuals have been officially recognized by NYSC.

The difference is not in validity but in category. One person served, while the other was exempted based on NYSC rules. In terms of official recognition, both certificates confirm that the graduate has fulfilled their NYSC obligation.

Academic Board Approval Is Non-Negotiable

For any graduate to be recognized by NYSC, their name must appear on the approved graduation list submitted by their institution’s Senate or Academic Board. This approval confirms that the person has officially completed their programme and has been cleared by the institution.

Without this approval, NYSC will not process the graduate, regardless of their age, course of study, or type of institution attended. The school must formally certify the graduation before NYSC will recognize the person.

Only Full-Time Programmes Are Considered For Service

Only graduates who did full-time programmes are eligible to serve in the NYSC scheme. This is the category that goes to camp and participates in the 12-month service.

Graduates who did part-time or distance learning programmes are still recognized by NYSC, but they don’t serve. Instead, they are issued an exclusion letter after registration.

Age is Calculated At The Date of Graduation

NYSC does not look at a graduate’s current age when determining their status. What matters is the age recorded at the time of graduation. This is the age that determines whether a person falls into the service or exemption category.

Even if a graduate is much older by the time they begin NYSC processing, it does not change their status. The decision is based entirely on how old they were on their graduation date.

NIN Is Compulsory for NYSC Registration

Under the NYSC eligibility, a valid National Identification Number is required for mobilization. Without the NIN, a graduate cannot register on the NYSC portal, regardless of the educational qualification or age at graduation.

This requirement applies to every graduate, regardless of whether they will serve, be exempted, or be issued an exclusion letter. It is a compulsory part of the process because it helps confirm nationality and ensures that a graduate cannot register for NYSC more than once.

What Happens If You Don’t Meet The Eligibility Criteria?

Since NYSC is a compulsory obligation for every Nigerian graduate, it is rare to find a graduate who is completely outside this system. The reason is simple. The program is designed for those with formal tertiary education. If a person has not attended a tertiary institution, they cannot be considered a graduate and are therefore not part of NYSC.

For graduates who meet the educational requirement but fall into other categories, such as being above the service age or having completed a part-time program, NYSC recognizes them differently. Those who are above the service age at graduation are issued an exemption certificate, while those who did part-time programs are issued exclusion letter.

Even though these graduates do not serve for the one-year duration, the documents they receive confirm that they have fulfilled their NYSC obligation as required by law. These certificates are valid for employment, public office, and any other purpose where proof of NYSC fulfillment is required. The system is simply structured to differentiate between those who will serve and those who are recognized but exempted or excluded.

Now that you understand how NYSC is structured, you can get a detailed explanation of the different categories by reading these guides:

  1. I graduated before clocking 30 years of age,and the senate board approved my result whiel iam 31 years of age and someone told me that iam not eligeble because senate list approved me whiel iam 31 years.pls iam eligeble for service or not?

  2. The section 2 of the NYSC Acts states that the age limit for participation in the one year service is 18 to 30 years. It’s if u are above 30 years that u would be exempted from service but people go on misquoting the Act. My friend is currently serving she graduated at 30 n she’s serving currently….. Please why the confusion???

    1. It looks like you’re contradicting your own statement. Eligibility is graduation before 30 years. Doesn’t mean you can’t serve even at 40 years provided you graduated before you clocked 30.

The 18 years age shouldn’t be brought into the discussion because no one graduates before the age of 18. There’s no academic system in the world that allows that. Even JAMB has pegged admission into higher institutions to minimum of 16 years.

    1. Unfortunately, there’s nothing I can resolve here. If the position of NYSC changes on part-time graduates being given exclusion from service, you’ll be duly informed.

  3. If i graduated before clocking 30 years and the senate list approved me while iam 33,can i still be eligible or not?

  4. Greetings sir, please I am a bit confused here and I need clarifications… I turned 30 on June 10 2024 and also graduated June 30 2024 as well according to what was written on my statement of result. Meaning I graduated same year and month that I turned 30. So does this also mean I don’t qualify?

    1. Hello Victoria. You turned 30 before graduation. I’m afraid you’ll be exempted from service. You’ll find out for certain after online registration.

  5. Am supposed to graduate at the age of 28 (a 4yrs course 2017-2021), the pandemic and asuu strike affected me given me 30yrs and some months because my school approved my result January 10th 2023. Would these two yrs affect me in mobilisation?

  6. Good morning local man
I am 29 years old and Senate will approve results by July but I will clocked 30 by October, am still eligible for NYSC

  7. Good morning sir. I graduated 8 of may2025 which I was 29,and turn 30 yrs june 5 2025, and senate are yet to approve result pls sir do u think I can still make it to NYSC

  9. Hi Local man

I’m a foreign graduate and I got my international passport on my graduating year because we’re allowed to use the school I.D cross the boarder, pls am I still eligible

    1. I honestly cannot answer this question because I don’t understand it. Whatever it is, you’ll get your answer whenever you go for evaluation at the Ministry of Education.

I love every bit of this article sincerely,
Having understand this points, you can easily embark on the journey never to be a novice.

  11. Hi local man

I graduated last year and my name wasn’t among those my school mobilized early this year, and i will be turning 30 in few days. Am I still eligible for NYSC anytime my school mobilizes me
    Thank you

  12. Hello Local Man

So I don’t know how stupid this question might sound to you, but I’d really appreciate it if you’d clear me on it anyways.

This is on the eligibility criteria for NYSC on the age aspect. In the article you made mention of certain situations like academic strikes or delays that may postpone a graduate service beyond their age limit even tho they should have graduated before the age 30 and you said in such cases, they are still eligible for NYSC.

Now please, my silly question is does such cases include the students having an extra year or 2 like having carryovers that will make the student have an additional year or 2 thereby clocking 30. Will such students still be eligible for NYSC?

I know the extra year or 2 has nothing to do with the government like strike or so. But please humor me. Like I said the question might sound stupid.

    1. I think you got me wrong. I never said being over 30 years as at the date of graduation due to ASUU will make you eligible for service. I was only trying to explain reasons why graduates may be over 30 before graduating.

The summary of the whole thing is that NYSC is not interested why you clocked 30 years before graduation. Only students who graduated before clocking 30 years are eligible for NYSC service. Whether or not it’s your fault that you’re above that age at graduation doesn’t matter.

  13. Please sir concerning the WAEC result as criteria is it the original waec result from the school you wrote the WAEC or just the print out from the WAEC portal?

    1. I only meant that for anyone to be eligible for NYSC, he or she must have sat for and passed the O’Level exams. I don’t think this is a bone of contention because Nigerian tertiary institutions ensure this is in place before giving admission to students.

  14. Hello local man
Please the name on my statement of result is Early childhood education
But the course is still showing NPe that’s the previous name of the course both in our jamb and on the senate list
Can we register for nysc and opt for change of course to select early childhood after registration

  15. Good morning local man
Please when is the likely registration date for batch b
because I have heard a lot of rumors claiming it would commence this week

  16. Good afternoon Mr Local Man. I graduated 2022, since then I haven’t gone for service is it possible I register for the next batch? And as well I have a correction of name on my jamb portal which is different from that on my NIN. THANKS

  17. Good morning local man, please I have a question regarding my date of birth and year of graduation, my date of birth on jamb is 12-10-1994 while I graduated in 20-12-2023. So when I did my calculation starting from date of birth to year I graduated, I was 29 years with two months. So, please I’m I still eligible for serving.?

  18. Okafor Francisca chidera

Good morning sir, please my statement of result, birth certificate and other documents has my name written like this: okafor Francisca chidera while my Jamb has okafor Francisca.C. the last name is not written in full in my jamb, will it affect my NYSC registration??

    1. As long as your school doesn’t frown at it, you won’t have a problem registering for NYSC because they use the name provided by your school on the senate list.

  19. Good morning, I graduated in 2020 but didn’t register for nysc and I’m planning on going for my service in 2025. I have checked the senate list and graduation list on nysc website and my info is correct. Can I register for the upcoming nysc batch B?

  20. I am in my 3rd year at almost 34 in a polytecnic, my nd was 2011/2013 and i dropped and now i’m doing my hnd to finirsh by 2026 at 35yrs. What can i do in order to serve please.

  21. Is someone who completed his/her academic work in 2020/2021 academic year but Senate approved result in December 2023 when the person had gone above the NYSC age limit of 30 years by just 8 days qualified for NYSC call up?

  22. The graduation day, month and year is the same with my HND result but the year I entered is wrong in my green card , can I be allowed to register in NYSC camp?

  23. I did my jamb registration in the year 2018, but an error was made i.e instead of 1998 as my date of birth, they imputed 1988, which automatically disqualify me from participating.
I’ve gone to jamb as instructed, I got the Indemnity form and also have taken it to my school since 3 months ago.
Pls how can I make it work? or other alternative on the way forward.

    Thank you

    1. I really don’t think the indemnity form can help here because NYSC draws your DOB from JAMB, not from your school. There’s nothing you can do aside from JAMB correcting the date of birth on their database.

  24. I successfully registered for batch A strem 2 but it’s show pending approval will it be possible for me to go for camp this year without it’s been approved?

  25. Anjola Oguntoye

Good day, I am a foreign trained graduate and I will like to join the batch C that’s starting in October. Can I register for it a month before October or when is it the best time to register??

    1. Registration is not done monthly, it is done with the schedule NYSC releases for every batch. Since you said you want to serve with Batch B, you can register with Batch B since foreign graduates are sometimes delayed due to verification.

  26. Precious Uchechi Hezekiah

Am a part timer, and I want to do Nysc

I gained admission in 2018 expecting to graduate in 2022 but ASUU strike and COVID-19 shifted my graduation year to 2024. With a Jamb age of 2nd October 1993 and approved graduation year of April 2024, does it mean one can still go for service?

  28. Greetings, sir.
I graduated last year September and my 30th birthday was on April. I should have graduated early 2023 but due to COVID 19, it couldn’t happen and graduation date was extended. Can I still be eligible?

  31. Good morning sir ,
Pls while registering early this year for my exemption,
After filing out my details. I realized I would need my marriage certificate and other documents as I did register as a married woman , which I don’t have yet because I am not yet legally married. I tried changing it to single but it wasn’t able to change . This affected my registration process then the portal was closed . Pls how can I rectify this please.

Please am I eligible for NYSC?

    2. No Ibrahim, that won’t be a problem as long as your school mobilize your details on the senate list with your correct course of study. Not to forget, there is also option for course correction on your dashboard after online registration.

  34. Type here..I am 29 by june this ur I would clock 30 and I will be graduating April, my result will be out by may 2025 can I still serve?

  39. Raphael chinedu

I am a student of the center for distance learning and continue education from the prestigious University of Abuja who have completed his study an obtained his BSC in economics in the year 2023. At the age of twenty seven, as a cdl&ce study who is single and fit in all ratification are my eligible to serve for the one year mandatory service despite that I was admitted true direct entry and having a matric number that does not come through jamb like 172010166 what is my faith as a center for distance learning and continue education student.

    1. Distance Learning id a part time program which means you are not eligible for service. However, you’ll be given Letter of Exclusion after online registration. Reach out to your school so they can mobilize your details.

    2. Omotayo oluwafayokemi Margaret

      Good morning
I’m a student of obafemi awolowo University I graduated last year.
My course of study is economics but I did e-learning program, along the line we were asked to do jamb regularization, print out our jamb admission letter and ensure our names are on the jamb matriculation list, so that we can be eligible for NYSC, which I’ve done. During the process of mobilisation, the school mobilized us as a part time student which wasn’t supposed to be so.in this case, what can I do, to be eligible for service. Can I complain to the NYSC direct instead of my school.

    3. Hello Raphael, I don’t think the school made any mistake here. Distant Learning is a part time program and as far as NYSC is concerned, you’ll be given Exclusion Letter after online registration.

  40. Progress Benedict

My results was approved 3rd of September 2024 while 20th of that same month I turned 30 am I still eligible? seeing I was still 29 yrs old on the 3rd of September but the month was the month I turned 30.

  41. Someone who was delay due to enlighten either strike or carryover and was final approve in senate graduating list, in same month which he/she turns 30 (15 of that month and senate approve result on 25th of the same month ) is it possible for the person to go for nysc

      1. I graduated 2024,my didn’t come out until this year July 2025 and i cloak 30th May this year..waiting for mobilization, will I still be eligible to serve?

        1. It looks like you were above 30 before graduation which means you’ll most likely be exempted from service. You’ll find out where you belong after online registration so be patient.

  42. Somebody who graduated at the age of 25 did not register for NYSC programme. Can he still go back to register for the programme at the age of 35 years.

        1. You can’t get an NYSC certificate without participating in the scheme. As a Nigerian, not having the certificate has some limitations, especially career wise.

  43. If I’m being exempted from camp activities based on health ground (physically challenged) how can I receive my PPA or I won’t get that also?
