Who Is Eligible for NYSC? A Guide on the Qualification Criteria

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is designed to harness the energy of graduates and promote national unity in Nigeria. It was established after the Nigerian Civil War to encourage cultural integration and bring young people from different regions together. Through NYSC eligibility, graduates get the chance to live and work in parts of the country different from where they grew up, helping them experience Nigeriaโ€™s diversity firsthand.

This NYSC eligibility guide is not just about who can go to camp. I will focus on those whom the program recognizes โ€ฆbasically, anyone who has business with NYSC at all. This includes graduates who will serve for 12 months, as well as those who will receive exemption certificates or exclusion letters.

Understanding these basic eligibility considerations is important because they form the program’s knowledge base. I will also point you in the right direction about articles you can read if you want to know more about specific categories, like who can actually go to camp.

NYSC eligibility criteria for Nigerian graduates, including recognition, service, exemption, and exclusion rules.

Eligibility Criteria for Participation in NYSC

The criteria for NYSC eligibility can be drawn from three main categories. These categories cover all graduates irrespective of their situation, whether they will go to camp, get an exemption, or be excluded.

The categories broadly focus on the personโ€™s nationality, the type of education they have completed, and their age at the time of graduation.

Nationality and Citizenship

The first consideration for NYSC recognition is nationality. To be recognized by NYSC, a graduate must be a Nigerian citizen. This applies to everyone, whether they studied in Nigeria or abroad.

Part of meeting this criterion is having a valid National Identification Number (NIN). Without the NIN, NYSC will not recognize you, even if you have the right degree or meet other requirements. This applies to all graduates, including those who will attend camp as well as those who will receive an exemption or exclusion.

Educational Qualifications

The second consideration for NYSC recognition is the type of education a graduate has completed. To be recognized, a person must have completed a program at a tertiary institution, either in Nigeria or abroad.

For graduates from foreign institutions, NYSC recognizes programs that meet acceptable academic standards as determined by the Federal Ministry of Education.

Only graduates who did full-time programs are eligible to serve for the 12-month duration. Those who did part-time or distance learning programs will not serve. After registration, they are issued the NYSC exclusion letter.

As part of the educational requirements, those who will serve and go to camp are required to obtain the NERD clearance slip. Graduates who are excluded or exempted from service do not need this document.

The Age Limit for NYSC

The NYSC program is designed for youth. By definition, only graduates who are 30 years old or below at the date of graduation are considered within the youth category and eligible to serve for the 12-month duration.

Graduates who satisfy this age requirement and also completed a full-time program will go on to serve and attend camp. Those who completed a part-time program, even if under 30, will still be issued the NYSC exclusion letter, as mentioned earlier.

For graduates who exceed the 30-year age limit as at the date of graduation, they will not serve, even though they did a full-time program. Instead, they are issued the NYSC exemption certificate. The exemption is different from exclusion, and it recognizes that the graduate is formally part of the NYSC system, even though they will not participate in the 12-month service.

It is important to note that being above 30 does not mean a graduate cannot serve at all. What matters is their age at graduation. If they graduated while under 30, they remain eligible to serve whenever they are ready, even if they are 40 or older by the time they actually start the program.

Note: Graduates who are not yet 18 years old at the time of graduation are not eligible for NYSC.

Facts You Should Know About NYSC Eligibility

There are a few important facts about NYSC that many people find confusing, especially when trying to understand eligibility. Some of these facts relate to graduates who will go on to serve, while others apply to those who will be given exemption or exclusion letters.

National Service is Mandatory for Nigerian Graduates

NYSC is compulsory for every Nigerian graduate who has attended a tertiary institution. Once you earn a qualification from a recognized institution, you automatically have business with NYSC. That process may lead to service, exemption, or exclusion, but one way or another, NYSC must account for you. It is not optional.

For those who are eligible for service, the one-year participation is not negotiable. A graduate cannot decide to skip service and request an exemption instead. NYSC determines each personโ€™s status based on its criteria, and that decision is final.

You Can Only Serve Once

NYSC recognition and service happen only once in a personโ€™s lifetime. After a graduate has been mobilized and completed service, they cannot be called up again for another round of service, even if they later earn an additional qualification.

In the same way, once someone has been issued an exemption or exclusion letter, that status stands. NYSC does not process the same person twice under different categories.

Exemption Is Not Optional

Exemption is determined strictly by age at the time of graduation. Once a graduate falls into the exemption category under this rule, NYSC automatically assigns that status.

It is not a matter of choice. Someone who is exempted cannot later decide to serve, and someone who qualifies for service cannot choose to be exempted instead. NYSC fixes each personโ€™s status according to its criteria, and that decision cannot be changed by preference.

The Exemption Certificate is Equivalent to the Discharge Certificate

The NYSC exemption certificate carries the same legal weight as the discharge certificate issued to those who completed the one-year service. Both documents show that the individuals have been officially recognized by NYSC.

The difference is not in validity but in category. One person served, while the other was exempted based on NYSC rules. In terms of official recognition, both certificates confirm that the graduate has fulfilled their NYSC obligation.

Academic Board Approval Is Non-Negotiable

For any graduate to be recognized by NYSC, their name must appear on the approved graduation list submitted by their institutionโ€™s Senate or Academic Board. This approval confirms that the person has officially completed their programme and has been cleared by the institution.

Without this approval, NYSC will not process the graduate, regardless of their age, course of study, or type of institution attended. The school must formally certify the graduation before NYSC will recognize the person.

Only Full-Time Programmes Are Considered For Service

Only graduates who did full-time programmes are eligible to serve in the NYSC scheme. This is the category that goes to camp and participates in the 12-month service.

Graduates who did part-time or distance learning programmes are still recognized by NYSC, but they don’t serve. Instead, they are issued an exclusion letter after registration.

Age is Calculated At The Date of Graduation

NYSC does not look at a graduateโ€™s current age when determining their status. What matters is the age recorded at the time of graduation. This is the age that determines whether a person falls into the service or exemption category.

Even if a graduate is much older by the time they begin NYSC processing, it does not change their status. The decision is based entirely on how old they were on their graduation date.

NIN Is Compulsory for NYSC Registration

Under the NYSC eligibility, a valid National Identification Number is required for mobilization. Without the NIN, a graduate cannot register on the NYSC portal, regardless of the educational qualification or age at graduation.

This requirement applies to every graduate, regardless of whether they will serve, be exempted, or be issued an exclusion letter. It is a compulsory part of the process because it helps confirm nationality and ensures that a graduate cannot register for NYSC more than once.

What Happens If You Don’t Meet The Eligibility Criteria?

Since NYSC is a compulsory obligation for every Nigerian graduate, it is rare to find a graduate who is completely outside this system. The reason is simple. The program is designed for those with formal tertiary education. If a person has not attended a tertiary institution, they cannot be considered a graduate and are therefore not part of NYSC.

For graduates who meet the educational requirement but fall into other categories, such as being above the service age or having completed a part-time program, NYSC recognizes them differently. Those who are above the service age at graduation are issued an exemption certificate, while those who did part-time programs are issued exclusion letter.

Even though these graduates do not serve for the one-year duration, the documents they receive confirm that they have fulfilled their NYSC obligation as required by law. These certificates are valid for employment, public office, and any other purpose where proof of NYSC fulfillment is required. The system is simply structured to differentiate between those who will serve and those who are recognized but exempted or excluded.

Now that you understand how NYSC is structured, you can get a detailed explanation of the different categories by reading these guides:

  1. Good afternoon my Local man.
Please if you have any legit contact of a registered institution or person that i can learn any digital still from, while servicing in Batch A2.
I would want a budget friendly one. I want to prepare ahead. So that after camping i can register for it. I want it to be online learning skill.

Please help me get any contact of anyone you know.

Thank you sir. For your effort, advice and encouragement.

I want to buy only NYSC complete uniform (up and dow) from ur vendor.
    God bless you.

  2. Good morning Local man. I am a med lab pcm and I registered in November but haven’t gotten call up number. I finished my internship in September last year and just got my license this January. But I discovered that the license already expired in December. Do I have to renew the license before going to camp in April?

  3. Nanaaishat Imodagbe

Please i saw your voice note concerning the portal, saying theyโ€™re most likely not going to open it for fresh registration. does this mean that those with their portal still locked cannot do revalidation?

  4. I need a advice from you
    Iโ€™m born 1998
I was about to collect jamb for university
So i want I ask I want reduce my age for The jamb so I can be able to serve because I think I will be above 30years before I finish

    1. Hope you are aware JAMB now uses the date of birth on applicant’s NIN? With that said, as long as you graduate before clocking 30 years on the date of birth used on JAMB, you are eligible for NYSC.

  5. A pcm who was mistakenly registered as a researcher instead of a student on the nerd platform, how can it be resolved?

  6. Good evening Boss.
    Trust you are well?
Please can you clarify this for my friend.
She recently reduced her age through NIN to meet the NYSC criteria but the DOBin jamb 1993.
    Is she eligible to serve

  7. Hello,
I have KEVIN in my result and as well in the Senate list but KELVIN in my NIN and bank account name, please will this be an issue?

    1. I usually advise that the name on senate list should tally with the one NIN. Since the difference is just a letter, maybe won’t be a problem. Just maybe.

You might want to consider correcting the name on NIN though. The bank doesn’t mean anything.

    2. Morning Local man
I have one question about issues of DOB sir
Iโ€™m a fresh graduate, the dob on my nin is different from one on bvn and ssce
Will that be an issues or whatโ€™s the way put

  8. Barakat Adewinmbi

I wanted to ask sir, a friend of mine was posted to adamawa sometime in the middle last year but couldnโ€™t proceed because she lost her dad. Now sheโ€™s ready to continue the process, how does she go about it sir? Would she have to go to the secretariat to re register or she should just wait for the next batch opening for registration?
    Thank you.

  9. Anyadiegwu Christopher

Pls sir my result have been approved and I am done with clearance, want to do internal mobilization but I have little issue, I have printed my original jamb admission letter and submitted but my problem is the issue of Date of birth, my jamb admission letter the date of birth there is 01/10/1999 while that of my NIN is 30/09/1999 and I was asked to fill my details so, pls which date should I put to avoid them chasing me out of camp or me getting issues

Which one does Nysc take serious pls sir.

      1. Anyadiegwu Christopher

        Thank you for your response
Since that NYSC will extract my date of birth from my jamb database, doing internal mobilization my I was asked to fill my date of Birth which the one I used was that of my NIN, since you said that the will extract it from my jamb database will the date of Birth for the internal mobilization form I fill doing internal mobilization affect me doing camp physical verification.

  10. Pls sir I want to ask about names, I have just two names in my credentials which is my results, but my NIN and my jamb reg is three names because Dey use my NIN to do my jamb reg, my question is since is three names on my NIN and two on my credentials is it going to affect me, or is it possible that my name will not come out on graduation list or senate list.

  11. Good morning sir, I just joined ur group.

Pls what are the requirements for married PCM?

And is it possible for me to use just my marriage certificate and other documents at my husband state? Because I don’t want to do change of name ๐Ÿ˜”

  12. About nerd sir is it untill you are selected by nysc before you can get your nerd or you can proceed and get it stored out while waiting for your brach?
And do you do the nerd registration?
    If yes how much pls

  13. Hi good afternoon
Please Iโ€™d like to make an inquiry.
I plan to go for NYSC, but thereโ€™s a discrepancy in the arrangement of my names across my documents.
My Oโ€™Level result, JAMB admission letter, B.Sc. certificate and all my university documents all have the same arrangement, but my NIN is different. Itโ€™s the same names, just in a different order.

I canโ€™t change my NIN because itโ€™s the correct version and itโ€™s linked to other important documents like my passport, birth certificate, and BVN. I have an affidavit from Ikeja High Court.

I just want to confirm if i can take this affidavit to camp and whether NYSC will accept it, because iโ€™ve seen people online say they donโ€™t accept affidavits?
    Thank you

      1. Thank you for your response.
Iโ€™m really sorry to bother you again
But are you saying that a name arrangement discrepancy will not pose any issues for me during online & camp registration?

Because I saw on your website that NYSC expects the name on the NIN to match the name on the Senate list, and mine does not exactly match. As I mentioned earlier, thereโ€™s a discrepancy in the arrangement i.e my first name and middle name are interchanged.
        For example:
NIN: Proud Nigerian Citizen (correct arrangement)
        Senate list: Proud Citizen Nigerian

Please I just want to be sure before I begin preparing for NYSC registration, as I wouldnโ€™t want a situation where I might be sent home from camp because my name arrangement donโ€™t exactly match.
I also just saw on your WhatsApp channel that some people were sent home because of name arrangement which is why iโ€™m particularly concerned.
I will be looking forward to your response, thank you so much.

        1. When I said the name should “match”, I wasn’t talking about the order of arrangement. I maintain that NYSC is not interested in the order of your name on NIN. But if you feel perturbed about it, you can go and fix your name on NIN then.

I actually render NIN modification services. Send me a message if you need help with that.

  14. Good afternoon
Pls I want to know if a person plans to exit camp, should they still travel with the necessary camp kits or just few things for the time they will spend doing camp registration.
I want to know if you be send back at the gate if you are not with the necessary camp kits.
    Thank you

    1. The essential Camp kits are for your convenience. Nobody will deny you entry if you don’t have them. By the way, there are vendors in camp as well so you can decide to buy it there if you like.

  15. Mohammad kabiru Adamu

Pls local man I made a mistake in names re-arrangement and its approve can I still change again at camp without hindering my camp registration

  16. Hello
    Good day local man
    I follow your channel
And i would want to be clarified on NERD as touching your recent update on it.

Iโ€™m not yet registered for nyscโ€ฆawaiting new registration this year but as at December i already did the whole NERD registration thing by the sections on my phone and it read successfully uploaded your project kinda thingโ€™
And now iโ€™m seeing we will have to meet accredited centres for registrationโ€ฆ

So really, Will this now affect me too and i have to redo this process all again??
Iโ€™m quite expectant on your reply, thank you.

  17. Good evening Local Man,
I applied for name arrangement on the NYSC portal since November last year and till now, it has not been rectified but they already gave me call up number. Please will it affect my going to camp?

    1. Be patient while your application for name correction is being reviewed. You can proceed to camp if it doesn’t change when call-up letter is released. However you must ensure that you name errors are minute ones so you’re not sent back home.

  18. Good evening sir.
Concerning NERD they said students aren’t allowed to register on their own anymore that they have to visit an accredited NERD center.
But I have already done mine last year around November and it was successful no one I just want to ask hope it won’t affect my slip I verified my slip and I shows successful I just want to know if the changes they are making won’t affect those who have sone theirs before
    Thank you sir

  19. Good afternoon sir

Please I registered November and was called up, but I couldn’t go, would the portal be open for revalidation or there’s no need to do that?
And do I also need to get the NERD clearance slip if I’m to follow this batch A?

    1. You may or may not be posted with the upcoming batch. Check your dashboard whenever call-up letter is released.
About NERD, I’ll say everyone should be patient for now.

  20. Good day local
Concerning the NERD registration, the site has made it inaccessible for students, prompting to contact with their accredited centre

  21. Good day local man,
I have applied to correct the โ€œclass of degreeโ€ on NYSC portal but not yet approved, will that affect for camp registration?

  22. Good afternoon sir
Since batch c2 has been shifted to batch A does that mean we are going to register for nerd?

  23. Good day local man. I am trying to print my NERD CLEARANCE SLIP.

I don’t know why I am getting this response “Academic report submission: Not complied. Upload your main file first.”

I have uploaded my project details and also my hod and project supervisor details

  24. Good morning sir,
Please sir is it compulsory for someone who isnโ€™t ready for NYSC to register for the NERD? And when is the NERD registration going to expire for those who wants to join the next batch of NYSC

  25. Good afternoon sir,
Pls what does NYSC fetch from jamb and NIN
And also what are the key details NYSC needs.I mean details that must correlate(same) all across one’s documents including NIN.

    1. Good evening local man.
Please Sir my name is Judith but what is written on my certificate is juidth will it be an issue for Nysc?

  26. Good evening local man and happy new year in advance.
Pls if I want to do correction of state of origin and LGA what are the documents I need to have pls
And will I be given an indemnity form?

  27. Good evening local man.
Please I want you to explain something to me since nysc is going to use the details on my jamb and the state of all giving and local government that is on my jamb is different from the one that is on my Nin so if I want to feed nysc registration form won’t they ask for my state of origin/LGA or they’ll pick it directly from my jamb details?

  28. Olatunde Olamilekan

The state of origin and local government that is on my NIN is different from the one on jamb
Though the error came from NIN but I’ve corrected it but I haven’t corrected it on my jamb
Won’t it stop my registration for NYSC?

  29. Makinde pelumi David

I was given a call up letter to Niger state and did not go due to personal reasons, if I am to register for the next batch, will I apply for remobilization or wait for normal registration, what will I do next sir

  30. Pls
Wanted to make inquiries about something boss…
I just applied for mobilization in my school.
Is it still possible to register for the batch C stream 2?

  31. Linus Terdoo Iorzua

Jamb gave admission in physics but my school changed it to statistics although I did change of course in my school, but Jamb disapproved theirs
Would that affect me during my camp registration?

  32. I graduated in 2006, and served in 2008. I graduated in 2022 for a second degree, and Iโ€™m over 40years. Do I need an Exemption letter from NYSC for the second degree or I should maintain the NYSC Certificate issued to me in 2008? Thanks

    1. Pls I want to ask if someone that will be 30 years old by next year and has already registered for NYSC batch c
Can the person be accepted to serve ??
      No called up letter yet

    2. Polycarp Kigbu Bitrus

      Good morning sir
My concern is on my BVN name which is BITRUS POLYCARP ATTAH while other of my credentials is the name above so i don’t know will this affect my documentation in camp when opening account?
Secondly, i doubt if my NIN captured my phone number but is it something to worry about?

  33. Is it possible to work on my age via court affidavit or something else so as to go for NYSC? I graduated at the age of 32 (2023) and I am currently doing my internship.

  34. Good morning sir, please I did registration on nysc and after that I did rearrangement of name on my dashboard and my correct name is Abibu Nana Aishat nd the one showing on my Call up Letter is Abibu NanaAishat Nana
All my documents and NIN is having Abibu Nana Aishat

Please how can I make this correction, I haven’t gone to camp yet with the fear that I will be sent back home

    1. The name on your dashboard must be the same on your certificate or statement of result. The order of name arrangement is not a problem. That’s all you should ensure is correct. NIN isn’t used for camp registration.

  35. For correction of date of birth on my dashboard How will I get the waec pin to change the date of birth
Because I write neco for my exam and they requesting for waec how will I go about that

  36. Dr. Isma'il Abubakar

    Good morning, Local Man.
Please, enlighten me on this date of birth thing.
The date of birth both on my WAEC and JAMB are incorrect. I have registered and made payment for NYSC successfully. I saw that they used the one on my JAMB profile which is also incorrect. You posted a picture on your WhatsApp channel that shows steps on how to change date of birth on WAEC.
If I do that will the date of birth on both my NYSC and WAEC change? I don’t even know which information does NYSC compare, is it the school information they compare to the JAMB information or NIN?
All my date of birth are correct everywhere except on my JAMB and WAEC.

    1. NYSC uses the date of birth on JAMB. If it’s not correct but you have the correct one on your WAEC certificate, apply for date of birth correction on your dashboard using WAEC verification Pin.

      1. Dr. Isma'il Abubakar

The problem is even the date of birth on my WAEC Certificate is not correct; it’s not same as the one the school has (which is the correct one) ๐Ÿ˜ญ
That means I’ll have to change the DOB on my WAEC certificate then use the certificate to apply for the change on NYSC ๐Ÿ˜ญ
I wish I could call you to just explain my problem to you so that you help me with a way out. How does NYSC knows it’s not correct; I mean what information do they use for reference?
I’m sorry for too much questions ๐Ÿ™
I really need a way out and I don’t understand what to do ๐Ÿ˜ญ
How do I change the one on WAEC

        1. Good evening local man
Pls I want to know if waec DOB is not co corresponding with the NIN or other documents, will I be screened out of camp ??
And secondly I graduated 2023 but I had carryover so after writing the carryover my results were push with the next set of 2024
No my graduation date is 2024 and my school ID and project are showing 2023
Will it affect me when enter camp??

  37. In nysc reg and camp which doc do they mostly use (waec or jamb) if in waec your native name is excluded but was added in your jamb is your sch uses the jamb listed name is it a matter of concern..

    1. In nysc reg and camp which doc do they mostly use (waec or jamb) if in waec your native name is excluded but was added in your jamb is your sch uses the jamb listed name is it a matter of concern.. Will it be a problem
